Allan Shulman on sea level rise / On Point & Vanity Fair

Allan was a guest on Tom Ashbrook's 11/19/15 show, Miami's Boom (and Climate Doom?), and talked about adapting to, rather than mitigating, the effects of sea level rise.

In the November issue of Vanity Fair, Allan was interviewed extensively by writer David Kamp for his piece Can Miami Beach Survive Global Warming?

S+A at Meetinghouse #6

The group exhibit Meetinghouse #6 opened December 1, 2015 in downtown Miami. Shulman + Associates created two site-specific installations for the show, In situ: points of departure and Delirium, 2015.   The show is up until January 9, 2016. More at www.meetinghousemiami.org.

Architects must consider a variety of conditions to arrive at the point of departure for any design. Starting with urban and architectural strategies, extending to practical economic, programming and environmental concerns. These conditions engender opportunities to be declaratory, synthetic, representational, or analytical. There is no formula. Whether quickly apparent or determined after many iterations, these points of departure become the essence of a given project. In themselves, they pose challenges of detailing, construction and function. Extrapolated, unmoored from context and constraint, they can make compelling abstractions.

Working in the urban districts of Miami and Miami Beach over the past 20 years, the architecture firm S+A has had the opportunity to explore the development of site-specific strategies through the lens of urban design, building typology, regionalism, and historic preservation. Miami’s highly compressed cycles of build and bust have created a rich source for this investigation, each cycle leaving intelligible layers, frequently in juxtaposition. Such a city feels incipient: an excellent laboratory for the firm’s work. Our place, the level we most love to engage, is the small-to-midsize project, where urban infill and adaptive use projects merge into the fabric of the city itself. In this context, our work aspires to ideas like succession, prolongation, layering, sequencing, and assemblage.

Cabana Bay Beach Resort in Architectural Record

In the July 2015 issue, Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort was featured as a hospitality building type study. In the piece, S+A principal Allan Shulman describes the design process for a hotel program whose scale and exurban context were unique to a firm that concentrates in boutique, urban projects. S+A served as Design Architect; Lindsay Pope Brayfield Clifford & Associates, Architect of Record; Daroff Design, Interior Design & Architecture (also interviewed). See the online version of the piece here, along with photos of the project by Robin Hill and Garrett Rowland.

910 Lincoln Road/AllSaints Spitalfields honored with preservation award

The Dade Heritage Trust awarded 910 Lincoln Road/AllSaints Spitalfields with Outstanding Achievement in the Restoration of a Historic Resource. Designed by Walter C. De Garmo in 1929, the Mediterranean Revival structure’s monumental front façade and nave-like interior space infuses commercial space with a reverential quality. The building’s restoration and transformation back to (original) retail use by S+A was motivated by a desire to preserve this dual quality while adapting the space to a new AllSaints Spitalfields store.

Shulman + Associates
100 NE 38th Street
Miami, FL 33137

Free and open to the public.

Shulman + Associates values its collaboration with artists on shared projects, and in the design of galleries, art centers, private collections and museums. For the 5th year in a row, the firm has asked an artist to use its Design District office building as a canvas for a site-specific installation during Art Basel Miami Beach in December.

This year, Amsterdam-based artist X-O will bring his ongoing traveling art project Beautiful Times to S+A's office façade.  A highly site-specific project, he makes "lost object" sculptures from discarded materials found in and around the area where these works find their temporary lives. For this piece, he will collect materials from the many construction sites of the Design District. X-O's project is in support of the Morgan Adams Foundation and the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center.
