Artist Workforce Housing/ The Anamar
Miami Beach, Florida | 2025
Comprising arts/retail/student dormitories, this unusual Artist/Workforce Housing project in Miami Beach broke ground in early August 2023. It represents the transformation of the neighborhood and involved finding a contextual response to workforce housing in an urban setting. The project creates a new type of affordable housing, combining workforce and artist housing with dormitories for Miami City Ballet students and performance and retail spaces on the ground floor. The cultural program, including performance space and dormitories for the Ballet, is clearly elaborated to the public space of the pedestrian mall on the site’s south side.
To combat a crisis of affordability in Miami Beach, the city has set aside open, city-owned lots for workforce housing development. The complex including the project site joins the Bass Museum of Art, The Miami City Ballet and the Miami Beach branch of the Miami-Dade Public Library, all organized around the greensward of Collins Park. The Design Architect worked with the client, the city and the community to design a structure that met the difficult development, social and cultural parameters of the site, as well as a tight budget. The project was a conceived as a step toward revitalizing the surrounding community and stimulating civic pride.
